Two thousand years ago, Astragalus was listed in "Shen Nung’s" herbal as a tonic.  Healers believe then, as they do today, that Astragalus increases the body’s resistance to disease.

Practitioners of Traditional Chinese medicine often combine Astragalus with other herbs because Astragalus is believed to help promote their healing power.  One of the most popular traditional Chinese tonics, which is still used today, was creating in the 13th century during the Yuan Dynasty.  Simply called Ginseng and Astragalus Combination, this tonic also contains licorice, ginger, black coal harsh, and other Chinese herbs.  It reportedly increases strength and endurance.

Healing potential of Astragalus:

Evidence suggests Astragalus works in the bone marrow to produce white blood cells and helps the body produce antibodies and interferon, which means that it enhances immune functions.  For people who are debilitated, stressed out, and seem to catch every cold or virus that comes along, top herbal healers frequently recommend Astragalus.  Because Astragalus takes several weeks to establish activity in the body, herbal healers recommend using it from three months to two years.

Astragalus is high in polysaccharides, large molecules composed of chains of sugar subunits.  Although scientists are quite sure why, they believe the polysaccharides have significant anticancer action. Astragalus is generally regarded as safe.
