Arnica to the Rescue for Bruises

Bruises add insult to injury, telegraphing to the world in bold black and blue and sometimes, in every color in the crayon box, that there has been a collision: between shin and coffee table, hip and stairway banister, shoulder and car door.

The results of these collisions? Broken circulatory vessels that leak blood beneath the surface of the skin, causing pain, swelling and that embarrassing, hard to hide discoloration.

Left alone, a bruise will heal in a few weeks. But herbal healers say that you can speed up the process with botanical remedies. We suggest applying arnica right after bumping an object that you know will probably result in a bruise.

A traditional bruise buster and the first choice of many for soothing black and blue spots, arnica has been shown by researchers to contain a substance called helenalin, which has anti-inflammatory actions. Applied to unbroken skin at the point of impact, arnica can lessen or even help prevent the discoloration and swelling of a bruise. Note: Arnica is toxic if taken internallally or if absorbed into the bloodstream by contact with scratched, cut, bleeding, or otherwise broken skin. ONLY use on unbroken skin. Also people with very sensitive skin should not use arnica because the oils can be irritating. To make a compress, add 60 drops of arnica extract to a cup of warm water. Soak a cloth in it, then lay it on your skin. Hold the compress in place with a dry cloth tied over it. Leave in place for 20 minutes to an hour.
